DL HUGHLEY TO HOST STAR STUDDED CONCERT& LITERACY FAIR
The Watts Expo: Artists and Business for literacy

Penny Marshall, Director, Jimmy Wahlberg, President of the Mark Wahlberg
Foundation, Alma Woods, Watts library namesake, and the late Kenneth Garner,
LAPD Deputy Chief, to be honored.
LOS ANGELES, July 13, 2009 – Reach Back LA kicks off its literacy initiative, “Read to write the wrongs”, with an all-star concert and resource fair on July 18, 2009 from 11 AM to 4 PM at the Watts Tower Amphitheater.
The event is designed to build public awareness about the problems of literacy in
socioeconomically challenged communities, educate the neighborhood about available
resources, and showcase the revitalization plans for the Watts community. In addition, Reach Back LA will acknowledge director Penny Marshall, Jimmy Wahlberg, Alma Woods, and the late Kenneth Garner for their outstanding contributions to the
community and to issue of literacy.
“Reading is a fundamental component of education. Strong readers create tomorrow’s
leaders. The Watts Tower Summer Expo is a step toward improving literacy in our
community.” said Chico Brown, Founder of Reach Back LA.
On-stage, comedian DL Hughley will host musical performances by Brian McKnight,
Teddy Riley and others. “I am proud to support Reach Back LA and applaud their
dedication to literacy.” said Hughley. “We need more of these kinds of events to uplift and educate our community.”
Over sixty (60) booths, representing organizations such as Community Redevelopment
Agency Los Angeles, Watts Health, and the Mark Wahlberg Foundation, will educate
and entertain attendees by reading stories and disseminating resource materials.
Celebrities will also be on hand to read from their favorite books and discuss the
importance of literacy.
